WSUD Initiatives: Green Roof

Innovative research into the effectiveness of green roof technology in South Africa is being tested in eThekwini (Durban). KwaZulu-Natal’s DEADP in conjunction with the Municipal Climate Protection Programme (MCPP) have initiated the Green Roof Pilot Project, which aims to appropriate the following:

  • A reduction in building temperatures and stormwater runoff;
  • The mitigation and adaption to climate change; and
  • Promotion of inner city biodiversity.

Two adjoining flat topped roofs at the eThekwini (Durban) Engineering Services building are being experimented on. Each has been fitted with 12 different varieties of vegetation. Each set consists of small, tailor-made trays, which include various types, sizes and thicknesses of grasses, plants and other vegetation.
