Cape Town Grand Parade
WSUD Initiatives: Permeable paving; bioretention ruts
The first major permeable paving scheme in the Western Cape has been implemented at the City of Cape Town’s Grand Parade, which flanks the City’s Central Business District. The rectangular shaped Grand Parade has been accepted as an official public viewing site for the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament by the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) (Cement and Concrete Institute, 2009). Permeable concrete block paving (PCBP) was selected as it characteristically attenuates stormwater sheet flow, thus mitigating the damages caused by flooding.
